What is Astrology?
Astrology is the observation of planetary movements and its influence on human life.
History and Origins
Our ancient sages studied planetary movements and their effects on peoples’ lives in detail and documented this observation in the books of Jyotish Shastra. Parashar Rishi and Jaimini Rishi are believed to be the pioneers of this splendid age-old Indian science. According to the late freedom fighter Shri Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who studied Vedic literature extensively, our scriptures are at least 95,000 years old.
Using satellite imagery, Western scientists have proved the existence of ‘Ram Setu’ between India and Sri Lanka below the Indian Ocean. Similarly, Japanese researchers have deduced that the specific planetary configuration on the date or tithi of Lord Ram’s birth had taken place about 7,000 years ago; effectively they have agreed that Lord Ram was born 7,000 years ago.
Astrology is indeed India’s gift to the world. As proud Indian citizens, we must cherish and preserve this rich heritage of knowledge based on scientific principles.
Understanding the Horoscope
- At the time of birth, each planet would occupy a certain place in space. To capture this unique cosmic configuration in an easy-to-understand format, the concept of the horoscope was introduced.
- The horoscope is thus a flat, 2D representation of the 3D cosmic configuration prevailing at the time of birth of an individual.
- In simple words, a horoscope is a map of the heavens showing the positions of the planets at the time of birth.
- Monitoring the movements of the Nine Planets across the skies is the core of Vedic Astrology. Each planet controls and influences different aspects of human life; essentially it depends on that planet’s particular position at the time of an individual’s birth. In other words, our destiny is directly linked to the planets and can be unlocked by studying their positions and movement.
- To understand the cosmic movements, the heavens are divided up into twelve rashis (zodiac signs) and twenty seven nakshatras (constellations); each nakshatra is further divided into four charanas.

- The horoscope is thus a 2D representation of the 3D cosmic configuration prevailing at the time of birth.
- The horoscope or janam kundali is a chart created on paper. It comprises 12 separate compartments called ‘houses’. Each house corresponds to 30° of the cosmos and thus the 12 houses collectively make up the cosmos, which is 360°.
- Each house refers to certain spheres of the individual’s activity. Zodiac signs are places in these houses and the planetary positions in these houses are shown according to the sign in which they happen to be at the time of the birth. The positive and negative effects of a given planet are determined by the zodiac sign it occupies.
